Orchard C of E Primary School Travel Plan
A travel plan is a working document, written by a working group of pupils, parents/guardians, teachers governors and local residents. Its aim is to identify safe, healthy and sustainable journeys to school and make these options an attractive alternative to travelling by car. This means finding ways to encourage walking, cycling, use of public transport and car sharing.
The idea to implement a travel plan at Orchard was born out of an initial survey done
by a parent governor who had been approached by parents who were concerned about congestion
on Blenheim Crescent during pick up and drop off times.
A working group was formed in 2006 and spent a year collecting information from pupils, parents, staff, governors, local residents and the local police. The group also ran competitions to raise awareness about road safety and the benefits of walking to school. The travel plan was completed in January this year and adopted by the governing body on 21st February. The first significant initiative of the plan is the introduction of the 'Star Walkers' scheme which begins on Monday May 14th to coincide with 'Walk to School' week.
