Film Show - 23rd Feb 2008

Broughton Astley Heritage Society staged a film show on Saturday 23 February 2008 entitled “Bygone Britain”. Rob Foxon’s film shows are always both entertaining and informative and this was no exception, presenting the audience of over 50 members & guests with a range of documentary films produced well before television invaded our homes and you were delighted to visit a one-off film show in a local hall to see moving images albeit in black & white.

The iconic film “Night Mail” was a serious documentary of its day showing how mail was sorted on the trains as it was distributed throughout the UK, a practice that ended in 2005. A 1934 film showed the Leek and Manifiold Valley Railway in the year of its closure whilst a commercial film made by Ford Motor Co. offered advice on how to pass the dreaded driving test introduced in the same year.

The poor state of housing in East London prior to slum clearance was charted in a 1935 movie whilst the travel film “Cornwall Calling” made by Austin cars mysteriously seemed to include hotels whose car parks were filled with the entire Austin range!
