What is a healthcheck

Quickly and simply it is a 'snapshot' assessment of how 'fit' we are as a village community. It looks at our economic, environmental and social strengths and weaknesses.

The 'doctor's kit' used to give a diagnosis is provided by the Countryside Agency and consists of a 'snapshot' and a series of worksheets relating to the environment, economy, transport, accessibility, social and community aspects of the village.

The 'prescription' for improvement then takes the form of an action plan highlighting projects to be undertaken.

Why was Broughton Astley sent to the doctors?

Broughton Astley was selected for a 'check up', after discussion with Harborough District Council, because it's population is so large. A public meeting was held in 2002 by the Rural Community Council to determine which community consultation process would be most beneficial to Broughton Astley. Local residents at the meeting decided a 'healthcheck' process was best suited the the village - that's how we ended up at the doctors!!

Who are the doctors?

The specialists are from the Rural Centres Project - this is a Project designed to help communities of larger settlements in Leicestershire develop projects that will regenerate their local area.

The general practioners are 'the healthcheck steering group' - these are members of the local community who give their time to help improve the village. They are an active, enthusiastic group and have already been very busy.

The planned youth shelter will look similar to this.

Healthcheck activity to date:

• Helping secure a grant of £450 for St Mary's Youth Club
• Contributing to the Parish Councils Christmas light switch on by partly funding the lights and the reindeer
• Contributing to the creation of 'Western Willows nature area' in the allotments
• Organising the village gateway sculptures
• Developing the BroughtonAlive.com website for young residents
• Planting in St Mary's church yard and providing benches
• Clearing the brook
• Securing 'start-up' funding for the carnival
• Supporting the Youth Shelter

And they have plans to achieve much more!

There is already a youth festival planned for 15th September on the recreation ground. A new action plan is also being created and suggestions are welcome from all age groups and interest groups.

What about the Parish Council

At all stages of the healthcheck process the aim is to work to compliment, rather than duplicate, and support existing schemes, particularly the work of the Parish, District and County Councils.
